Description (last modified by Thore Böckelmann)

MUI should not register all applications with commodities.library. They should only be registered if the application actually needs the functionality of commodities.library.

Instead, under OS4 all applications should be registered with application.library. This provides the same show/hide/quit functions without hooking into the input stream.

Just registering an application as a Commodity does NOT hook it into the input stream in any way. This is done if and only if the user defines a hotkey for an application. Without a hotkey the input stream is not disturbed in any way and a MUI applicaton just takes advantage of the general features that commodities.library offers: iconification, termination, etc.

Unlike commodities.library application.library does not offer iconification by pressing a hotkey. So just replacing commodities.library by application.library does NOT provide the same feature set.

Furthermore there is the MUIA_Application_UseCommodities attribute. Setting this to FALSE will let MUI skip all the Commodity stuff for an application. So if a developer thinks it is really necessary to disable the typical features of a Commodity this has been possible for approx. 20 years by now. It seems nobody ever cared about this so far…

To make it short: Commodity support is not going to be removed, because it does not have the kind of bad impact you seem to be expecting.
